    Sheehan preaches anti-war message at Santa Cruz campaign fundraiser

    SANTA CRUZ — Celebrity activist Cindy Sheehan is spending time these days not on the Texas prairie but in places like Santa Cruz, trying to shore up support for her bid for Congress.

    The San Francisco Bay Area native, who made headlines for her war protests outside President Bush’s ranch in 2005, is now in the running for the seat of one of the nation’s most powerful Democrats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

    “It’s horrible what Pelosi used her power for,” Sheehan said at a Thursday night fundraiser at the Veterans Memorial Hall.

    Addressing a crowd of about 100 people at the Green Party-sponsored event, the mother-of-four-turned-peacenik won several rounds of applause for her claims that Democrats have not lived up to their promises of change after their landslide congressional wins in 2006.

    “When the majority of people in the United States want the war to end, why aren’t we talking about bringing our troops home from the Middle East?” she said.
